The Reina-Valera revision has been a cornerstone text for the Hispanic evangelical church for generations. Its language is deeply woven into the expressions of Spanish-speaking Christians, who often memorize verses and passages that serve as sources of comfort and divine inspiration.

In 1960, the American Bible Society published this revision after extensive efforts from a committed team of scholars who modernized the text’s orthography and enhanced its grammatical structure for clarity.

The Reina-Valera 1960 remains the foundational Bible for many within the evangelical Spanish-speaking community, known for its adherence to traditional Spanish literary style.

With nearly two centuries of dedicated ministry, the American Bible Society encourages individuals to engage with the transformative messages contained within Scripture. The organization collaborates with Christian churches and national Bible societies worldwide to disseminate God’s Word, addressing core life questions and challenges through innovative ministries.

The Reina-Valera, also referred to as the Bible of Casiodoro de Reina or Biblia del Oso, is one of the earliest translations of the Bible into Spanish. It was derived from original texts in Hebrew and Greek and first published in Basel, Switzerland on September 28, 1569. The translator, Casiodoro de Reina, was a Spanish religious figure who embraced Protestantism. The revision by Cipriano de Valera in 1602 is what gave it its well-known title.

This translation gained significant traction during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Today, various versions of Reina-Valera are among the most widely used Bibles in Spanish-speaking Christian communities, including many evangelical churches and other faith groups such as the Seventh-day Adventist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, International Gideons, and numerous non-denominational Christians.
